Wildlife Dept rescues 34 animals from human habitat: Ranger
In the past nine months, Ganderbal has witnessed seven incidents of human-wildlife conflict, leaving several individuals injured, officials said.
During this period, the department successfully captured and relocated 34 wild animals that had ventured into human habitats, a wildlife department official informed the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), adding that no fatalities were reported during these encounters.
The official said that the wildlife department conducted a total of 242 activities to capture wild animals that had strayed into residential areas.
“Out of the captured animals, 22 were snakes, 5 were porcupines, 1 was an owl, 1 was a civet cat, 1 was a monkey, and 4 were bears. These animals were later relocated to safer natural habitats,” he said.
Despite the department's efforts, the wildlife employees lack adequate equipment to handle such situations effectively, another official said.
However, local residents have praised the wildlife department for its prompt response in capturing wild animals near human settlements.
Suhail Qazi, Ranger of the Wildlife Department, highlighted the department’s proactive approach in monitoring and swiftly responding to the presence of wild animals in human habitats.
“Our actions are aimed to rescue both the wild animals and human populations from harm,” he said, adding that the department had provided financial assistance totalling six lakh rupees to the injured individuals over the last nine months
