Locals demand construction of ramps at footbridge site in Sopore

Strong resentment is brewing among locals of Tujjer Shareef village in Sopore against the roads and buildings department for constructing a bridge without ramps.

Talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the constructed bridge is much above the level of the road.

"Now, the department wants to construct concrete steps for approaching the bridge. Light motor vehicles can’t ply on the bridge,” they said.

According to them, there was a makeshift wooden bridge and it was better compared to the new concrete bridge.

Locals urged the lieutenant governor and district administration to intervene and direct the concerned officials to take immediate steps.

An official at R&B division Sopore told KNO that the project was completed at a cost of Rs 36,35,283 against an allotted Rs 40,46,106.

He said that as per the design for the footbridge, the concrete steps were proposed to approach the bridge.

But locals and PRI's are opposing it and are demanding “construction of ramps so that LMVs can move over the bridge. It was not part of allotment and design”.

When contacted the concerned Block Development Officer (BDO), Nazir Ahmed, he said that though locals are in favour of ramp instead of steps, the matter will be taken up with the executing agency—(KNO)
