The “only” playground used by sports enthusiasts of several villages in the Bonibagh area of Kangan of Ganderbal district is in shambles since 2019 after the debris of a landslide nearby was dumped in the ground.
Although the then Deputy Commissioner assured that the ground will be brought back into its original shape, nothing has been done till date, the locals told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).
They said the youth of the area and adjoining villages are left with no option but to play in this dilapidated ground as it is the only sports field for many villages. Many youths have been injured due to debris and uneven ground level, they added.
“Nowadays, the Lieutenant Governor-led administration is highly promoting sports in J&K, and in order to engage youth in sports activities, mini stadiums and playgrounds are being provided in every village. However, this sports field, which is one of the largest in the district, has been neglected,” said a youth Bilal Ahmad.
“The ground should be handed over to J&K Sports Council to bring it in its original shape,” the youth of Bonibagh said—(KNO)
