Rain brings smile on saffron growers face

Timely rain has brought cheer on the faces of saffron growers in Kashmir saying it can result in overwhelming crop production this year.

Chairman Saffron Growers Association Kashmir Abdul Majeed Wani told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that rain was need of the hour as most of the saffron land has no irrigation facilities available.

He said that it will help all saffron corn to grow and will increase the production of the growers which has been very low since 2014.

“Due to the timely rain the whole crop will grow and it will lead to the bumper crop this year for what growers have been waiting for since past several years,” he said.

Growers said that the much-hyped National Saffron Mission has not yielded results as the authorities were unable to make water pumps functional meant for irrigating the fields in dry season.

They said that irrigation, conversion of land and shortage of saffron seed are major challenges to them at the moment.

They added that the government in the last few years has taken many steps to promote saffron and it will bear fruits very soon—(KNO)
