Acute water scarcity hits Sopore locality, residents aghast



The residents of Tawheedabad Tarzoo locality of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district Tuesday staged a protest against the Jal Shakti department for failing to provide proper water supply to them.

The protesters told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that the authorities in the Jal Shakti department were pushing them to face hardships and accused them of ignoring their plight.

Mehnaza, a female protester, said that the residents were forced to use water from streams, which poses a risk of an outbreak of disease.

Demanding immediate redressal of their grievances, she further said that they are facing immense hardships due to the acute shortage of water supply from the last many years, which is making their life difficult.

"The administration is ignoring us. Despite repeated assurances and promises by the Jal Shakti officials, the department has failed to provide proper drinking water to the residents here,” Fatima, another female protester, said.

The protestors appealed to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and the district administration for proper water supply to their area.

Meanwhile, Executive Officer Sopore Division Ramesh Pal Sharma assured that the water Crisis in parts of Sopore will be redressed at the earliest—(KNO)
